The first time I went to Europe, I encountered the European shower. It almost always featured a hand-held shower head, and didn't always include a hook to hang it on. At the time, I thought, well, although the US isn't quite as scenic as Europe, at least we have state-of-the art plumbing.
Now, 20 + years later, I am not so certain.
Have you ever been to Japan and experience the heated toilet seat? I am also thinking more about bidets.
